From a logger's house to twenty keys

The year the motel's first floor went up. The cabins behind it are older, and they started as a shipwreck.

  1. 1938

A logger's home on the hillside road

Curley and Thora Couvelier bought what is now Curley's as their home. Curley worked as a local logger, like many Sekiu residents at the time, and their children went to the school on the hillside above the property.

  2. 1940s

    Cabins from a shipwreck

A ship ran aground near Sekiu Point. Curley salvaged lumber from the wreck and built several cabins on the property, rented to the logging crews working in the area. Those are the cabins you can still book today.

  3. 1954

    Eight units, all electric

As Sekiu became known for big Chinook salmon, more resorts appeared along Front Street. The motel's first floor went up with eight units, every one with electric appliances, proudly advertised on the sign out front.

    A second storey

Four years later a second storey was added, and the whole family kept busy as the business grew.
